More than 170 animal species.
That’s the wildlife count for Leonida in Grand Theft Auto VI, according to Game Informer’s exclusive cover story, published September 29, 2026.
Land, air and sea.
Several of those species have never appeared in a Rockstar game.
Which animals are in GTA 6
Game Informer names two groups.
Florida natives:
flamingos, manatees, pelicans and alligators.
Invasive species:
green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques.
Monkeys. In Leonida.
The magazine spells it out itself: Florida has monkeys too.
Leonida copies Florida’s mix
Game Informer’s cover story centers on one idea: Rockstar set out to make Leonida as close to Florida as possible.
And Florida’s wildlife goes well past the postcard.
Native species. Exotic species. Invasive species.
Leonida brings in all three.
Our GTA 6 map guide already showed alligators, mangroves and airboats in Grassrivers. Now there’s a number behind it: 170+ species spread across the whole state.
What Rockstar brings over from Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar is building on its work in the Red Dead Redemption series.
According to Game Informer, GTA 6’s animals will show:
iridescence, color that shifts with the angle of the light;
bioluminescence, their own glow;
translucency;
different feather types;
and new hair and fur systems for coats and pelts.
A pelican with the sun behind it.
A soaked flamingo.
An alligator coming out of the water.
That’s where the system goes to work.
Rare, Discoverable and Legendary
You’ll be able to track some animals.
Game Informer mentions three categories: Rare, Discoverable and Legendary.
Which species land in each one: secret.
Rockstar hasn’t revealed which creatures are the hardest to find.
If you played Red Dead Redemption 2, you already know “legendary” as an animal label. For GTA 6, the label is all we have so far.
