GTA 6 gameplay: what we know after the Extended Look

Rockstar showed 26 minutes of GTA 6 running on PS5 on August 27, 2026. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson then explained in interviews how police, robberies, cars and safehouses work. The headline: story missions alone won't pay enough to progress the story.

Rockstar has now shown GTA 6 gameplay. On August 27, 2026, it released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, roughly 26 minutes captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, with gunfights, driving, robberies, police, side activities and story scenes. It’s edited with cuts, so it isn’t one continuous play session.

The details came after. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, walked through most of those systems in an interview with Famitsu (in Japanese; full English translation by GTAVice). The change that matters most for how you play: finishing missions won’t give you enough money to move the story forward.

What the Extended Look shows

The video premiered on Netflix and reached YouTube at 9 p.m. ET the same night, according to Game Informer. It follows Jason and Lucia through several jobs. Music mogul Boobie Ike shows up as one of the people handing out work, and a drug deal ends with police on top of them. Career bank robber Raul Bautista anchors a bank-job getaway with a four-star wanted level, a car chase and a helicopter, followed by a Molotov cocktail to torch the car and the evidence. At Megamundo’s opening event they work security for media mogul Andrés, and the night ends in an armed hostage situation. There’s also a slow-motion shooting mechanic.

Rockstar hasn’t published a mission list, mission order or rewards.

Jason and Lucia can switch mid-mission

GTA 6 has two protagonists, and switching depends on the moment. Per Nelson in Famitsu, some missions let you swap freely, some lock you to one character for story reasons, and some switch for you: during a bank job, Jason shoots from Lucia’s car, then control passes to Lucia behind the wheel. Outside those restrictions you can switch between them.

Jason and Lucia can become a couple

The relationship is part of the game. Nelson framed it as choosing between “We’re not a couple, but let’s work together” and “Let’s get through this together as a couple,” and said that if you don’t build the relationship, you lose options like holding hands or kissing (GTAVice translation). That’s about Jason and Lucia. Rockstar hasn’t announced romance with other characters.

Police work from what witnesses tell them

You steal a car and someone sees you. The police don’t know exactly where you are, but they start an investigation based on your clothes, your appearance and the vehicle. Rockstar calls that state Heat. To shake it, you can change clothes, ditch the weapon or leave the Heat area, according to the Famitsu interview.

Wanted stars are still here. The Extended Look shows a chase at four, and Nelson said “the stars don’t increase easily” because the team is careful about how many stars each action earns. The maximum isn’t confirmed.

Criminal Profile tracks what kind of criminal you are

GTA 6 evaluates whether you’re acting like a professional or like someone violent and dangerous, and the world gets more aggressive the more aggressive you are. Nelson set it apart from Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honor system, which handed out perks like store discounts (GTAVice). Nelson said the system isn’t designed to punish players who choose the violent route.

Robberies without going in guns blazing

Nelson listed convenience stores, jewelry stores, small banks, gang hideouts holding cash and drugs, and vehicles as targets. A store can go quietly: pick the lock with a snap gun, destroy the security cameras so nobody sees you, and disable the security system so the alarm never goes off, per the GTAVice translation.

For getaways there’s suppressing fire: miss on purpose and shoot near someone to scare or confuse them and buy time. If you show restraint, Nelson said, you can escape without killing anyone.

You’ll need money from outside missions

“Simply completing missions won’t give you enough money to progress the story,” Nelson said. The rest comes from the open world: robberies, cars and jobs on your own time (GTAVice). The game expects you to go out and earn it.

Stealing a car takes tools

Newer and luxury cars need their key cloned so the alarm doesn’t trip. Nelson also told IGN that older cars can be opened by smashing a window or with a Slim Jim, while modern luxury models need a Key Cloner, as Notebookcheck reported. High-end cars carry trackers, and even after you get away the signal can give your location to the police. Vehicle fences can remove those trackers.

Your phone can scan a car and show its model and value before you touch it, and damage lowers that value. Early on you only have room for three vehicles; buying garages around the map lets you own more, and temporary stolen cars disappear when you restart the game (GTAVice). Pulling a driver out of a moving car is still instant.

Long guns are visible

Long guns are no longer invisible. You manage them with lockers at Ammu-Nation, and you can stash guns in your personal vehicle or the trunk of any car. People notice: walk around with a gun out and they won’t panic, but they may leave or react aggressively (GTAVice).

Civilians can fight back

Try to take a car from a driver and sometimes it won’t work: they may even shoot at you, Nelson said. Pedestrians also come in different heights and builds for the first time; earlier games had about two height variations.

Safehouses have their own life

Whichever character you aren’t controlling follows their own schedule, and both have things they do every day around the house, like making coffee. As the story moves on, you move between hideouts. Nelson compared it to Red Dead Redemption 2’s camps, where everyone living there has a daily routine (GTAVice).

As in GTA V and RDR2, areas you haven’t visited stay hidden on the map until you get there. What’s known about Leonida is in the GTA 6 map guide and in how big the map is.

Jason and Lucia can bulk up or gain weight

The game tracks health, cardio and fitness. You can make your character muscular or have them eat a lot and get heavier. At the gym, stamina drains as you move and you have to finish the set before it runs out. Food gives temporary boosts to your meters. Rockstar tried a system where you bought groceries and restocked the fridge, and cut it because it made things too complicated (GTAVice).

The phone exists inside the world

Nelson describes the phone as a physical object in the game world, with banking, video, fitness, social media and vehicle delivery apps (Scooter Bros). Jason and Lucia can send each other photos but can’t post them, since they’re both on the run. Some random encounters show that a character is livestreaming; the Extended Look includes a car theft with an influencer streaming from the trunk (Game Informer).

Activities in the video

Game Informer counted rally racing, kayaking, weightlifting, a strip club, a shooting range, base jumping, backyard wrestling, dirt bike racing, watching TV, basketball, scuba diving with an underwater cave, airboats through the Everglades parody and jet ski races. Seeing them confirms Rockstar showed them. Which ones are free-to-play minigames is still open. Nelson did talk directly about the gym, robberies, car theft, random encounters and fishing, which he said he likes.

Narrower roads

Roads are narrower and closer to real-world widths, with more traffic, Nelson said. Reckless driving gets harder, and if the car is for resale, every crash cuts the price.

DualSense and PS5 Pro

Vibration is tuned for each minigame and vehicle, and in cars you control speed by how far you pull the trigger (GTAVice). PlayStation’s game page lists GTA 6 as PS5 Pro Enhanced, with DualSense vibration and trigger effect support. Sony doesn’t detail what changes on PS5 Pro.

What isn’t confirmed

Resolution and frame rate on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S: not published. The Extended Look gives no numbers.

What PS5 Pro improves exactly: not detailed.

The maximum number of wanted stars: unconfirmed. The video shows four.

Which activities from the video are freely playable: unconfirmed.

Online: Rockstar hasn’t dated it. What’s known is in GTA 6 Online. For mods and roleplay servers, see GTA 6 mods and FiveM. The music from the video is in every Extended Look song.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Unlock times are in the GTA 6 release date guide.
