GTA 6 ships without a disc: the physical edition comes with a download code

Open the GTA 6 box and there’s no disc to put in. There’s a download code.

Take-Two confirmed it when pre-orders opened on June 24. Rockstar Store makes it even clearer: the physical version includes a code inside the box and no disc.

The box arrives November 12, 2026. The game, on the 19th.

That one-week gap lets you start preloading before launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What changes if you buy the box

Open the box. Redeem the code. Download GTA 6 to your console.

You need two things the box doesn’t include: an internet connection and free space.

The box doesn’t give you a single GB.

The disc drive can sit still: there’s no disc to put in.

The code goes to the store. The game goes to storage. The optical drive never enters the picture.

What happens with resale and lending

This is where the box stops acting like a disc.

A disc comes out of your console, goes back in its case and can be at someone else’s place tomorrow.

The code doesn’t make that trip.

Before you use it, the box can still change hands. Redeem the code and the trip ends: the digital license is tied to that account.

After that, the box can stay on the shelf. The copy doesn’t travel with it anymore.

Box on the shelf. Game on the account.

That’s why resale and lending work differently. A box with an unused code can be given away or sold. Once it’s redeemed, there’s no standalone copy left inside that someone else could install the way they would with a used disc.

How much the physical edition costs

$79.99: physical box, standard edition, code inside.

That’s the US price Rockstar confirmed for the physical version at our last check.

On PlayStation Store, the digital Standard also costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition, $99.99.

The boxed version with a code is the standard edition. Rockstar lets you step up to Ultimate later with a digital upgrade.

Why it arrives November 12

Digital pre-orders can start preloading on November 12. Take-Two will release the boxed version with a code that same day.

Box on the 12th. Game on the 19th.

In between, one week to download it.

The week is there. What’s missing is the size: Rockstar still hasn’t said how many GB people will have to download during it.

So we can’t estimate how long the download will take or how much space you’ll need to free up either.

What we know about a disc later on

For a few days, it seemed possible again.

On June 25, a Rockstar support reply made the rounds that mentioned getting a “physical copy” in the following months.

Two days later, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the email was real, but that the phrase didn’t refer to a future disc edition.

According to a source familiar with the plans cited by the outlet, “physical copy” still meant the same box with a code. The report added that, at the time, there were no plans to make discs, either for launch or for the months after.

VGC and Vice later covered the email and the clarification.

Today, what’s confirmed fits in one sentence: box with a code.

There’s no disc announced.

There’s no “never” either: Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t publicly ruled out making one later.

The box is still physical

The disc is gone. The box stays.

You can buy it in a store, give it away before redeeming the code or leave it on a shelf.

What you can’t do is take the game out, lend it and put it back later.

That detail matters if you’re comparing editions too. Rockstar is selling other physical items around launch; the GTA 6 collector’s edition takes that idea a lot further.

What isn’t confirmed

Install size: no number yet.

Mandatory day-one update: Rockstar hasn’t detailed one.

Later disc release: no date and no announcement either. The report that there are currently no plans comes from a source cited by The Hollywood Reporter, not from a Rockstar or Take-Two statement ruling it out for good.

Rockstar also hasn’t publicly clarified whether every code included in the boxes can be redeemed outside the region where it was bought.
