GTA 6 SSD: what to buy for PS5 and Xbox Series
Rockstar still hasn't said how many GB GTA 6 will need. On PS5, you can expand with a compatible M.2 SSD; on Xbox, it's internal storage or an expansion card to play.

Rockstar still hasn’t put a number next to GTA 6: how many GB it will need, we don’t know (our GTA 6 file size guide breaks down the numbers going around). If your PS5 is short on space, the list starts like this: M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 SSD, heatsink and 5,500 MB/s or more, as recommended by Sony. On Xbox Series X|S, optimized games run from internal storage or a compatible expansion card.
The box doesn’t give you a single free GB: the GTA 6 physical edition comes with a download code, and the game ends up installed on the console.
What Sony requires
The PS5 has an internal slot for expanding storage. Sony lists the requirements on its support page.
It supports drives from 250 GB to 8 TB. They have to be M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4; Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or higher and requires a heat dissipation structure.
And then it has to fit: with the heatsink installed, the whole assembly can’t be thicker than 11.25 mm.

Budget: Kingston FURY Renegade with heatsink, 1 TB
1 TB, a heatsink and more than enough speed for Sony’s requirement. Kingston advertises up to 7,300 MB/s read and lists the heatsink version as PS5-compatible on its FURY Renegade page.
It’s the most modest upgrade in this guide: 1 TB if you’re buying with GTA 6 in mind and keeping a short library behind it.

Midrange: WD_BLACK SN850X with heatsink, 2 TB
The SN850X puts 2 TB where the Kingston puts 1. Speed is still more than enough for PS5.
Sandisk advertises up to 7,300 MB/s read and specifies PlayStation 5 compatibility on the heatsink model, according to the WD_BLACK SN850X page.
2 TB if GTA 6 isn’t going to live alone: several big games can stay installed and you visit the delete button less often.

High end: Samsung 990 PRO with heatsink, 4 TB
The Samsung 990 PRO takes this guide’s capacity to 4 TB. Samsung advertises up to 7,450 MB/s read for the heatsink model on its official page.
Here, space is what counts. All three SSDs exceed the 5,500 MB/s Sony recommends; the jump to 4 TB buys capacity to keep a much bigger library installed.
Rockstar hasn’t announced any GTA 6-specific benefit from installing it on an SSD that clears Sony’s requirement by a wider margin.

On Xbox Series X|S: expansion card
Xbox uses a different system to expand the space that games optimized for Series X|S run from.
A USB drive can store them. To play, you’ll have to move them to internal storage or to a compatible expansion card, according to Xbox Support.
The Seagate Expansion Card comes in 1, 2 and 4 TB and is designed to maintain the same peak performance as the internal SSD, according to the official Xbox page.

Which capacity to choose
There’s still one number missing to fine-tune this purchase: how many GB GTA 6 takes up.
On PS5, 1 TB is the most modest upgrade in this guide. With 2 TB, more big games can stay installed without hitting the delete button as often. The 4 TB is meant for a much bigger library.
On Xbox, the free space you already have matters too. A 512 GB Series S starts with less storage than the 1 TB models, so the card’s capacity carries more weight on that console.
Until Rockstar publishes the size, there’s no point buying several terabytes just because an estimate says how much GTA 6 might take up.
What isn’t confirmed
Rockstar hasn’t published GTA 6’s install size on PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.
It also hasn’t confirmed whether there will be an additional download at launch or how much space it would take.
