GTA 6 Police and Wanted System: Heat, Six Stars and Escaping
GTA 6 police can search using information about your appearance, clothing, vehicle, weapon and who was with you. Escaping can mean breaking those matches and leaving the Heat Area.

What these labels mean
- Confirmed
The information comes from its owner: the studio, publisher, manufacturer or platform, such as Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony, Elgato or YouTube.
- Unconfirmed
Media reports, leaks, estimates, community reconstructions and our own deductions. A rumor remains unconfirmed even when many outlets repeat it.
GTA 6 keeps the Wanted Star system, but police need information to pursue you.
Rob Nelson explains that a crime can reach law enforcement through witnesses, alarms or other systems capable of raising the alert. Police can then work from details about your appearance, clothing, vehicle, weapon and, in some situations, Jason and Lucia being seen together. Famitsu
That information feeds into Heat.
Losing sight of a patrol can therefore be only the first step. You may also need to change the car, clothing or weapon police are looking for and leave the area where the search is concentrated.

How a police pursuit starts in GTA 6
Rob Nelson explains that information about the crime has to reach law enforcement.
That can happen through:
- a witness;
- an alarm;
- other detection systems described during previews. Famitsu
Preview coverage also mentions CCTV.
Committing an illegal action therefore does not guarantee the same immediate police response in every situation. What happened at the scene, and what information escaped with it, matters.
Rockstar has not yet published every rule for missions, CCTV or scripted police responses.
Wanted Level and Heat: how they work together
Wanted Stars show the current level of police pressure.
Heat covers the information officers are using to find you.
Wanted Stars show the pressure right now. Heat carries the clues police have about you.
Nelson uses vehicle theft as an example. A report can include:
- the suspect’s appearance;
- clothing;
- vehicle;
- weapon;
- Jason and Lucia being seen together. Famitsu
You can break line of sight while still matching that description.
You can lose the patrol and still be wearing the description they’re looking for.
The next part of the escape is changing what police know about you.
What the black car pursuit shows in the Extended Look
The GTA VI Extended Look contains one sequence that is especially useful for understanding the new police system.
Jason and Lucia remain at four stars throughout the escape.
What changes is the information displayed underneath.
| Moment | What we see | What we can say |
|---|---|---|
| 15:22 | Four stars, identified vehicle and active pursuit | Police remain in contact with Jason and Lucia and know the vehicle |
| 15:50 | The four stars remain, but their visual state changes | Rockstar has not publicly explained what that color means |
| Afterwards | The car is abandoned/destroyed and Jason and Lucia move to another vehicle | The vehicle identification disappears during this transition |
| 16:22 | New van, four stars and a patrol vehicle drives past without restarting the pursuit | The numerical wanted level remains the same while the identification information has changed |
The difference matters because the stars appear to represent only one part of the system.
Several icons underneath them relate to information police have about the suspects: appearance, clothing, vehicle and other identification data.
During the first part of the sequence, Jason and Lucia’s car is one of those pieces of information.
Later, it disappears.
But the published footage does not show which exact action removes that icon.
IGN and other analyses place the change somewhere during the transition between police losing sight of the vehicle, the car being abandoned or destroyed, and Jason and Lucia moving into a new van. Frame-by-frame analyses do not completely agree on the exact moment either.
We therefore cannot say that burning the car automatically clears its identification.
We also cannot say that switching vehicles alone is necessarily what removes it.
What we can establish is the window: the car stops appearing among the police’s visible identification data between the end of the sedan pursuit and the move into the van.
That helps explain why two situations with four stars can behave very differently.
The counter still says four.
What police know about Jason and Lucia has changed.
This section is Daykyri’s analysis of published footage. Rockstar has not officially explained every color and visual state used by the new wanted system.
Switching cars can remove one identifier
If officers are looking for a particular vehicle and you abandon it, that part of the description stops matching.
The Extended Look shows Jason and Lucia changing vehicles before a patrol later passes their new car while the Wanted Stars remain active. Rockstar Games
Switching cars can help without clearing the entire pursuit. As a general mechanic, it can invalidate the vehicle clue; that does not prove it is the exact action that makes the icon disappear in the Extended Look sequence.
The car can drop out of the description. You haven’t.
Nelson also says that returning to a vehicle already identified by police can expose you again. Rockstar has not explained exactly how long that information persists.

Changing clothes can help too
Clothing can be part of the police description.
Nelson says changing outfits can stop you from matching the clothing that was reported. Famitsu
Police may still have other identifiers, including your vehicle or physical appearance.
One clue changes. The others still count.
You can leave the weapon behind
The weapon used during a crime can also become part of the suspect description.
Nelson describes physically abandoning it to reduce that match. Famitsu
Drop the weapon and one part of the description stops matching.
If it is a weapon you already own, GTA 6’s persistent weapon system lets you regain access through your personal vehicle or weapon lockers.
That creates another choice during an escape: keep carrying the weapon police are looking for or leave it behind.
Jason and Lucia can split up
A police report can also describe two suspects travelling together.
Nelson says separating Jason and Lucia during an escape can make that description less useful. IGN
If officers are looking for a pair and the two protagonists move in different directions, one of their identifiers no longer matches as closely.
Rockstar has not published the complete Wanted Level rules for separated protagonists.
What is the Heat Area?
The Heat Area is the zone where police are concentrating their search. Famitsu
The pursuit can continue while you remain inside it, even after you break direct visual contact.
Leaving the area can allow the active search to end.
An escape can therefore combine two actions:
- stop matching the police description;
- leave the Heat Area.
Pay & Spray returns and can reduce Heat
Pay & Spray returns in GTA 6.
Rob Nelson confirms that repainting a vehicle can help during a pursuit. Famitsu
If police are looking for a car of a particular color, entering with that vehicle and leaving with a different paint job makes the existing description less useful.
You drive in with a car police know. You drive out with one of their clues changed.
Pay & Spray also connects with GTA 6’s wider vehicle repair and management systems.

Police are less dependent on traditional minimap blips
Rockstar is reducing the need to spend a pursuit staring at cones and dots on the radar.
Nelson explains that police are not normally presented during chases exactly as they were in earlier games.
You can use Focus to locate them.
TGG reported after visiting Rockstar North that Focus can reveal officers through certain obstacles. TGG
Status: UNCONFIRMED.
Rockstar has not publicly documented its full range or limitations.
Escaping on foot can sometimes work better
Nelson gives an example involving a city pursuit at roughly three stars.
Traffic and narrow streets can make maintaining speed in a car difficult. In that situation, an escape can involve leaving the vehicle and using:
- alleys;
- running;
- jumping;
- climbing. Famitsu
Rockstar has worked on movement to support this kind of escape route.
The three-star level is the context of Nelson’s example, not a fixed rule that forces you out of the car.
GTA 6 shows six Wanted Stars
GTA VI: An Extended Look shows six star positions in the HUD. Rockstar Games
That confirms a six-position visual scale.
Rockstar has not yet explained exactly what response appears at the maximum level.
We still do not know:
- which crimes reach six stars;
- which units respond;
- whether the military appears;
- how many police vehicles are involved;
- what happens with helicopters;
- how the Heat Area changes.
What do white, red and hollow stars mean?
Gameplay shows several visual states for Wanted Stars.
Preview coverage connects them with things such as:
- direct contact;
- active searching;
- identification status.
Rockstar has not published an official legend assigning a precise meaning to every color and fill state.
What is confirmed here is that several visual star states exist.
Unconfirmed: exactly what each color or fill state communicates, including whether it represents contact, active searching or identification.
CCTV and masks
Preview coverage mentions CCTV as part of the identification system.
Jason and Lucia have also been shown using face coverings.
Rockstar has not published enough information to say that a mask guarantees anonymity or that destroying a camera always removes all evidence.
Both mechanics still need direct testing.
What happens when you get Busted?
Nelson confirms that physical cash carried by the character can be at risk when you are Wasted or Busted. Famitsu
That gives the bank account a practical purpose.
The complete rules for fines, lost equipment and respawning have not yet been published.
How to lose the police with what we know so far
Based on the systems Rockstar and preview coverage have described, an escape can look like this:
- break visual contact;
- check what police know about you;
- switch vehicles if the car is identified;
- change clothes if your outfit is known;
- leave the reported weapon behind if it still identifies you;
- split Jason and Lucia if police are looking for two suspects together;
- use Pay & Spray when you need to change the vehicle description;
- use Focus to locate officers;
- leave the Heat Area;
- avoid immediately returning to an identified vehicle.
A pursuit may require several of these actions rather than all ten.
What still needs confirmation
Rockstar has not yet detailed:
- exact behavior from one to six stars;
- police units at each level;
- police memory duration;
- Heat Area size and timers;
- official meanings for every star state;
- complete CCTV and mask rules;
- Focus range and limitations;
- full Busted consequences;
- city versus countryside behavior;
- complete rules for separating Jason and Lucia.
Frequently asked questions
Does GTA 6 have six Wanted Stars?
Rockstar’s HUD shows six star positions. The exact police response at the sixth level has not been published.
Does every crime automatically trigger police?
Not necessarily. Witnesses, alarms and other detection systems affect how information about the crime reaches law enforcement.
What is Heat in GTA 6?
Heat represents the information police use to search for you, including your appearance, clothing, vehicle and weapon.
Does switching cars remove the Wanted Level?
Not automatically. It can stop you from matching the vehicle police were looking for.
Does changing clothes help you escape?
Yes. It can invalidate the clothing portion of the police description.
Can you drop a weapon to lose the police?
Rob Nelson says abandoning the weapon used during the crime can reduce how closely you match the information police have.
What is the Heat Area?
It is the zone where police are concentrating their search. Leaving it can allow the active pursuit to end.
Does Pay & Spray help you lose the cops?
Yes. Repainting a vehicle can make it stop matching the police description.
Are police shown on the minimap?
Not in the same traditional way. Focus can be used to locate officers during a pursuit.
