GTA 6 Character Switching: How Jason and Lucia Work

GTA 6 lets you move control between Jason and Lucia in free roam and during certain missions. Switching can be almost immediate when they are together, while distant swaps move the camera across Leonida.

GTA 6 lets you switch control between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

The Extended Look shows the system working during action and when the protagonists are in different parts of Leonida.

When Jason and Lucia share a scene, control can move between them with almost no interruption. When they are apart, the camera rises over the world and travels to the other protagonist.

When they’re together, the switch can stay inside the scene. When they’re apart, the camera has to travel.

The character you leave behind also keeps acting. During missions, the AI-controlled partner can continue driving, shooting and reacting to the situation.

You can play as Jason or Lucia

Rockstar has built GTA 6 around two playable leads.

Both can move through Leonida independently.

Dazed describes the structure as letting the pair operate together or head off and cause chaos separately.

You can therefore leave Jason doing one thing while Lucia is somewhere else, then move control between them.

Switching when Jason and Lucia are together

This is where the transition becomes especially fast.

The Extended Look shows both protagonists participating in the same action while control moves between them without leaving the scene.

During a pursuit, one can drive while the other shoots.

Switch control and your role changes while the chase continues.

The system becomes part of the action rather than simply a way to choose which protagonist you want to explore with.

Switching when they are separated

The Extended Look also shows a long-distance transition.

Lucia is shown during a parachuting sequence. The HUD displays both protagonist portraits and a switching prompt.

The camera then rises over Leonida, crosses the world and descends toward Jason.

The visual language is similar to GTA V’s long-distance character switching.

Rockstar has not published exact transition times or distance restrictions.

You can switch during missions

Yes.

Preview coverage describes control moving between Jason and Lucia in the middle of missions and pursuits.

That allows the same job to divide roles between the pair.

For example:

Lucia drives → Jason covers the escape → control changes → you drive as Lucia while Jason keeps shooting

Rockstar has shown this kind of division during sequences involving Raul Bautista.

Not every mission allows completely free switching at every moment.

Some missions lock one protagonist

GTA 6 also has opportunities and jobs tied to a specific character.

The Extended Look shows situations where one protagonist receives a job and the action continues from that perspective.

Story context can therefore decide who is available.

Rockstar has not published the complete list of switching restrictions.

They may depend on:

  • the mission;
  • location;
  • story state;
  • Jason and Lucia performing different tasks.

The other protagonist is controlled by AI

When Jason and Lucia are together, the character outside your control can keep participating.

Demonstrations show the partner:

  • driving;
  • shooting;
  • taking cover;
  • helping during robberies;
  • reacting to events.

You switch characters, but the one you leave behind stays in the scene.

The final game’s AI limits still need to be tested after release.

You can do activities together

The two protagonists can also meet outside main missions.

Rob Nelson gives examples including:

  • pool;
  • mini golf;
  • kayaking;
  • exploring;
  • store robberies;
  • bank robberies.

You can spend time together or head out alone.

Shared activities can also develop their relationship.

Can you call Jason or Lucia to join you?

Creator previews describe contacting the other protagonist and inviting them to activities or jobs.

{unconfirmed}

Rockstar has not published a complete companion-command menu.

We do not yet know whether players can freely order the partner to:

  • follow;
  • drive;
  • attack a specific target;
  • wait;
  • retrieve a vehicle;
  • leave an activity.

Switching also matters inside vehicles

Preview coverage describes role changes while both characters share a vehicle.

One protagonist can drive while the other:

  • uses the phone;
  • shoots;
  • covers the pursuit.

Certain sequences also involve changing seats.

That gives character switching a tactical role during escapes.

A pursuit can switch driver and shooter

During pursuits where Jason and Lucia are together, one character can drive while the other shoots.

Flow Games also describes the player switching between them during the pursuit itself.

Character switching can therefore happen inside the same action sequence.

What button switches characters?

The Extended Look shows Jason and Lucia portraits with an R1 prompt during one switching sequence.

That proves the prompt is connected with the mechanic in that scene.

Rockstar has not published the final control scheme or said that R1 is the universal character-switch button.

The final control layout remains the safest source for that detail.

Jason and Lucia keep living when you are away

Rockstar interviews describe both protagonists following their own activities and routines.

They can separate and later be found elsewhere in the world.

This connects character switching with GTA 6’s safehouse and chapter systems.

The exact amount of off-screen simulation remains unknown.

Do Jason and Lucia share inventory?

Rockstar has shown weapons, vehicles and properties surrounding both characters.

It has not yet published a complete explanation of which resources are:

  • shared;
  • individual;
  • transferable.

Both protagonists clearly interact with the wider equipment and vehicle systems.

The exact inventory split is still undocumented.

Do Jason and Lucia have unique special abilities?

Rockstar has not announced GTA V-style special abilities for either protagonist.

There is no confirmed equivalent to:

  • Franklin’s driving slow motion;
  • Michael’s shooting ability;
  • Trevor’s rage mode.

Jason and Lucia may have differences in play, but Rockstar has not presented them as GTA V-style special powers.

How it differs from GTA V

GTA V used three protagonists who often lived separate lives.

Switching frequently moved the player across Los Santos to see what another character was doing.

GTA 6 places two protagonists inside the same situation much more often.

That makes switching useful during:

  • firefights;
  • pursuits;
  • robberies;
  • travel;
  • shared activities.

When they are far apart, the aerial transition returns.

Is GTA 6 story mode co-op?

Rockstar has not announced campaign co-op.

The second protagonist being present under AI control does not mean another player can take control.

There is also no announced:

  • split-screen mode;
  • local co-op;
  • online story co-op;
  • second-player Jason or Lucia mode.

Rockstar has not yet detailed how its future multiplayer product handles the protagonists.
