GTA 6 Car Theft: How to Steal, Sell and Keep Cars with WAiNK

GTA 6 adds progression to vehicle theft. WAiNK lets you check security, trackers, registration cost and potential resale value before deciding whether a car is worth stealing.

Stealing a car in GTA 6 can start before you touch the door.

The WAiNK app lets you inspect a vehicle for information related to security, trackers, registration cost and potential resale value. Then you still have to get inside, start it and deal with systems such as alarms or trackers. Game Informer

Rob Nelson also describes progression inside the vehicle-theft system. Simpler cars can use basic entry tools, while some modern or high-end vehicles require equipment obtained later, including the Key Cloner. Famitsu

The basic loop is:

scan the car → choose how to enter → get it started → deal with alarm or tracker → escape → sell, register or use it temporarily

WAiNK tells you whether a car is worth stealing

WAiNK is a smartphone app built around vehicles.

According to Game Informer, a scan can show information related to:

  • security;
  • tracker status;
  • registration cost;
  • estimated fence or resale value. Game Informer

Rob Nelson has also described vehicle scanning as a way to learn the model, value and cost of registering the car as your own. Famitsu

That gives you a decision before the theft starts.

One car may be worth a lot but carry difficult security.

Another may pay less and be much easier to move.

Some creator-preview reporting describes WAiNK displaying the tools connected to a car’s security more explicitly. Rockstar has not published the complete interface, so the security information is established while the exact presentation remains less certain. TGG

Getting inside and starting the car are separate problems

On protected vehicles, opening the door does not guarantee you can drive away.

Getting in doesn’t mean getting it started.

GTA VI: An Extended Look shows two entry options:

A Slim Jim can provide entry on compatible vehicles without breaking the glass.

Smashing the window is more direct, but it can trigger an alarm.

Then comes the second problem: starting the car.

A modern vehicle can leave you sitting behind the wheel while still waiting for a valid electronic key.

The Key Cloner locks some cars behind progression

Certain modern or high-end vehicles need a Key Cloner.

Nelson says:

  • some cars require the tool;
  • you obtain it later;
  • some vehicles therefore remain unavailable earlier in the game. Famitsu

You can find an expensive car, possibly even get inside it, and still be unable to take it.

Rockstar has not published the Key Cloner unlock point, its cost or a complete list of vehicles that need it.

What happens when someone is driving the car?

Traditional carjacking remains part of the game.

Nelson also describes different reactions when you order a driver out:

  • they may comply;
  • they may resist;
  • they may respond with a weapon. Famitsu

An occupied car changes the entry problem, but we do not yet know whether carjacking bypasses every later security rule on every vehicle.

Alarms and witnesses can bring police attention

Some vehicles have alarm systems.

Breaking a window can trigger them. Famitsu

That increases the chance of the theft being detected, although Rockstar has not published a fixed rule such as “alarm = X Wanted Stars.”

The wider police system also uses witnesses, reports and incident descriptions.

GTA 6 Police and Wanted System

Expensive cars can keep tracking you after they start

Leaving the parking spot may only solve part of the theft.

Higher-value vehicles can carry more advanced trackers.

Nelson says some systems can transmit your position to police if you remain driving slowly for long enough. Famitsu

The car itself can therefore continue exposing you after you have successfully started it.

Rockstar has not published the exact speed threshold, timer or complete tracker rules.

How to remove a tracker

Specialist vehicle fences can remove tracking systems. Famitsu

That becomes another part of progression.

Early in the game, you may find cars whose security creates more trouble than your current tools and contacts can handle.

Later progression opens more protected vehicles.

Randy buys specific vehicles

Nelson names Randy as a contact connected to stolen cars.

Randy can request particular vehicles.

Find one he wants, steal it and bring it to him. Famitsu

That gives vehicle theft more structure than simply selling whatever car happens to be nearby.

Rockstar has not detailed Randy’s payouts, request frequency or how many similar fences exist.

You can sell stolen cars

Yes.

WAiNK can provide an estimated vehicle value before you take it, and Nelson directly discusses selling stolen cars through the system. Game Informer Famitsu

The decision starts before the lock is broken:

is this car valuable enough to justify its security and tracker risk?

Damage lowers the sale value

The condition of the car matters.

Nelson says damaging a vehicle during the escape reduces what it is worth. Famitsu

Every hit you take on the way out can come off the price when you sell.

That adds a second pressure to the chase.

You need to get away.

If you want the full payout, it also helps to arrive with the car intact.

Rockstar has not published an exact depreciation formula.

Pay & Spray returns

Pay & Spray is back in GTA 6.

Nelson describes uses including:

  • repairing a vehicle;
  • repainting it;
  • helping reduce Heat by changing its color;
  • handling parts of the stolen-vehicle process. Famitsu

More substantial vehicle modifications are associated with tuning shops.

You cannot keep selling cars at the same Pay & Spray

After one vehicle sale, that location has a cooldown.

If you want to sell another immediately, Nelson says you need to visit a different Pay & Spray. Famitsu

The duration of that cooldown and whether specialist fences use the same restriction have not been published.

How to keep a stolen car

A stolen vehicle can become a personal vehicle.

You have to register it.

WAiNK lets you see the registration cost before making that decision. Game Informer

That gives a stolen car three possible outcomes:

ChoiceResult
Sell itTurn the car into money
Register itMake it a personal vehicle
Use it temporarilyDrive it without adding it permanently to your collection

Storing a car does not automatically make it yours

An unregistered stolen car remains temporary.

Nelson describes temporary vehicles as:

  • appearing with a grey icon;
  • remaining available for a while;
  • not automatically becoming permanent property;
  • disappearing when the game is restarted. Famitsu

He compares the idea to temporary horses in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Storing it doesn’t make it yours. Registering it does.

To keep the car, register it.

You start with three vehicle slots

The game initially gives you space for three vehicles.

If all three slots are occupied, registering another car requires freeing one.

You can later buy garages around Leonida to increase storage capacity. Famitsu

Rockstar has not published garage prices, capacities or the maximum number of vehicles you can own.

Scooter Bros can deliver your personal vehicle

Registration also connects a car with other systems.

Rob Nelson confirms Scooter Bros, an app that can bring one of your personal vehicles to your current position. Famitsu

The three apps serve different jobs:

AppFunction
WAiNKAnalyze vehicles
Scooter BrosDeliver one of your personal vehicles
RydeMeTransport the player

GTA 6 Fast Travel: RydeMe, Buses, Trains and Taxis

Cars can also store weapons

Vehicles do more than move you around Leonida.

Nelson confirms that weapons can be stored in cars.

Long guns can be kept in:

  • your personal vehicle;
  • Ammu-Nation.

You can also use the trunk of a stolen car temporarily while you still retain that vehicle. Famitsu

GTA 6 Weapons and Inventory

A stolen car can remain a police problem

A vehicle-theft report can contain information such as:

  • vehicle description;
  • suspect appearance;
  • clothing;
  • weapons;
  • incident details. Famitsu

Even after the immediate chase ends, returning to an identified vehicle may expose you again.

Switching cars removes one part of that description.

Repainting at Pay & Spray can also help.

Rockstar has not published exactly how long police retain vehicle information.

There is no confirmed VIN system

Community discussion has speculated about persistent VINs or license plates permanently connected to crimes.

Rockstar has not confirmed that system.

What is supported is:

  • vehicle identification;
  • registration;
  • repainting;
  • Heat;
  • personal vehicles.

There is no need to add a VIN layer until evidence supports one.

Some areas prevent vehicle theft

Having the correct tool does not mean every vehicle is stealable in every location.

Nelson describes protected areas around hideouts, story locations and friends where certain theft interactions are disabled. Famitsu

He specifically mentions the area outside Dre’Quan’s club.

A car can be sitting in front of you, with the correct tool available, and still have no theft interaction in that location.

The full GTA 6 car-theft loop

Based on what has been shown and described before launch:

  1. Scan the car with WAiNK. Check security, tracker, registration cost and value.
  2. Decide whether it is worth the risk. More valuable cars can demand better tools and contacts.
  3. Get inside. Slim Jim avoids breaking the glass on compatible cars; smashing it can trigger an alarm.
  4. Start it. Some modern vehicles can require the Key Cloner.
  5. Watch the tracker. Advanced systems can continue exposing your position.
  6. Escape without wrecking it. Damage lowers resale value.
  7. Choose what happens next. Sell it, register it or keep using it temporarily.

A parked car can therefore become a risk-and-reward decision before the pursuit has even started.

What still needs confirmation

Rockstar has not yet detailed:

  • exact number of security levels;
  • complete theft-tool list;
  • exact Key Cloner unlock;
  • registration and sale prices;
  • damage depreciation formula;
  • tracker speed and timer;
  • Pay & Spray cooldown duration;
  • number and locations of vehicle fences;
  • garage prices and capacities;
  • recovery of destroyed personal vehicles;
  • any insurance system;
  • Scooter Bros price and cooldown;
  • differences between Jason and Lucia;
  • which systems will carry into GTA VI Online.

Frequently asked questions
