Eighty hours is one playthrough, not a universal runtime.
Those 80 hours give us a useful sense of the scale of one playthrough.
Rockstar has not published a separate main-story length, an average player time or a 100% completion estimate.

Where the GTA 6 80-hour figure comes from
The number comes from Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North.
Nelson completed a GTA 6 playthrough in February 2026 in roughly 80 hours.
That run covered the campaign alongside some optional objectives with narrative consequences.
Because both types of content were mixed into the same playthrough, we cannot split the total cleanly into main-story time and side-content time.
We have the total. We still can’t say how much belonged to the story and how much to optional content.
Is GTA 6’s main story 80 hours long?
We do not know yet.
Nelson included optional content, so his 80-hour total cannot be used as an exact main-story figure.
We also do not know how much of the run was spent on:
- main missions;
- optional objectives;
- travel;
- exploration;
- activities;
- conversations or world events he chose to follow.
Rockstar would need to provide a separate figure before we can assign a precise runtime to the campaign alone.
Why Rob Nelson’s playthrough is not an average either
Nelson knows the game from the inside.
A first-time player does not arrive with the same map in their head.
That could make parts of his run faster because he knows the routes, systems and objectives.
He may also play differently from someone seeing Leonida for the first time: stopping to test particular systems, following certain content or choosing optional goals that another player would skip.
His 80 hours are useful evidence from one completed playthrough.
Player averages will require actual post-launch data.
Optional content can affect the story
One of the most useful details in Nelson’s account is that some optional goals have narrative ramifications.
Optional does not mean inconsequential.
That makes a clean split between “main story” and “side content” harder.
An objective can be optional while still changing something that follows.
Two players may therefore reach the ending after taking different routes and spending different amounts of time along the way.
How long will GTA 6 take to 100%?
There is no verified figure yet.
Before we can calculate a 100% completion time, we need to know what GTA 6 actually requires for 100%.
Rockstar has not published the complete list of:
- missions;
- required activities;
- collectibles;
- challenges;
- events;
- properties;
- completion requirements.
Any specific 100% runtime before launch remains an estimate.
Can a first playthrough take longer than 80 hours?
Yes.
Nelson’s number describes his playthrough. A player who explores more, spends time on activities or completes more optional objectives could go beyond it.
Someone focused mainly on progressing through the campaign could also finish sooner.
We do not have enough completed player runs to establish either end of the range.
The 80 hours are not a minimum
The figure should not be treated as a floor.
We know how long one person took and that his run mixed story with optional content.
We do not know the shortest possible route through the campaign.
We also do not know how much content can be skipped while still progressing the story.
Is GTA 6 longer than GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2?
The 80-hour run points to a very large game, but comparisons need matching categories.
The GTA 6 number comes from one individual playthrough containing the story and some optional content.
Putting it directly beside a “main story only,” “story + extras” or community-average figure for GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 would compare different measurements.
After launch, the cleaner comparison will be:
Change the category and you change the comparison.
story vs. story
story + extras vs. story + extras
100% vs. 100%
Until then, Nelson’s playthrough works better as its own reference point.
What we know about GTA 6 length

What we still need to learn
After release, we will be able to separate figures that are currently mixed together:
- campaign length;
- story + optional content;
- average completion time;
- 100% completion;
- mission count;
- amount of optional content;
- differences between playstyles.
For now, about 80 hours remains the clearest concrete runtime we have from someone at Rockstar describing a completed GTA 6 playthrough.
