What these labels mean
- Confirmed
The information comes from its owner: the studio, publisher, manufacturer or platform, such as Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony, Elgato or YouTube.
- Unconfirmed
Media reports, leaks, estimates, community reconstructions and our own deductions. A rumor remains unconfirmed even when many outlets repeat it.
GTA 6 gives players ways to control a criminal encounter without automatically turning every crime into a pile of bodies.
Rob Nelson confirms a new series mechanic: suppressive fire.
Instead of shooting directly at someone, you can deliberately fire nearby to frighten or confuse them and create time to escape.
Some robberies can also be completed without anybody realizing a crime took place.
Nelson demonstrates one clear route:
rear entrance → Snap Gun → cameras → alarm → register → leave
Avoid detection and disable the security systems, and police may never receive a report.

A store can be robbed without anyone knowing
Nelson demonstrates a quiet store robbery.
Instead of walking through the front with a weapon, the player approaches from behind.
Kicking the rear door would activate the alarm.
A Snap Gun lets you bypass the lock without smashing the door.
Once inside, you can disable the cameras and security system before taking the cash.
Leave cleanly and nobody has to report what happened.
Preparation becomes part of the robbery itself.
Witnesses matter before you enter
Stealth begins outside the building.
Nelson says a passerby who sees you preparing to storm a store with a gun can contact police.
By the time you finish the robbery, officers may already be waiting.
Avoiding detection therefore means controlling what information you reveal before the crime starts.
Suppressive fire lets you shoot without aiming to kill
Rob Nelson explicitly calls this suppressive fire.
You deliberately fire near a person rather than into them.
The shots can frighten or confuse the target.
Those seconds give you room to leave.
Rockstar designed the option partly so players can escape without killing police officers or civilians.
You fire close. Not to hit them — to buy time.
Lethal force remains available
Nothing forces the player into a non-lethal route.
You can still shoot directly at people.
The consequences extend beyond the immediate firefight.
Criminal Profile tracks aspects of how you behave as a criminal, and excessive aggression can produce a more aggressive response from the world.
You can target a police car instead of its occupants
Nelson gives another example from a pursuit.
Jason shoots the tires of a police car.
The vehicle crashes without killing the officers inside.
The player could instead aim directly at the police.
Both approaches solve the immediate problem differently.
The hit indicator distinguishes hits, incapacitation and death
Rob Nelson told Flow Games that GTA 6 uses different colors in its hit indicator.
White means the target was hit.
Yellow indicates incapacitation.
Red indicates death.
The system allows some shots to neutralize a person without necessarily killing them.
Many encounters can be completed without killing
Nelson says many situations allow you to get through without killing anybody.
That can involve combinations of stealth, suppressive fire, escape, disabling security and changing the identifying information police have about you.
It does not establish a full pacifist campaign.
Rockstar has not said every story mission has a zero-kill solution.
Not killing can be a combat decision too.
Can you finish GTA 6 without killing anyone?
Unconfirmed.
The game clearly contains situations that support non-lethal outcomes.
The Extended Look also shows major story firefights.
Rockstar has not announced a pacifist achievement, route or ending.
Civilians can fight back
Leonida residents do not always surrender when threatened.
Nelson says some are armed.
During a carjacking, a driver might comply.
Another may resist.
Another may pull a gun.
You can fight back or abandon the attempt.
A civilian can stop being background and enter the fight.
Visible weapons affect NPC reactions
Long guns are physical objects rather than invisible inventory slots.
If you walk around holding a gun, nearby people may react.
Some keep their distance.
Others can respond aggressively.
That means your approach can change an encounter before the first shot is fired.
Holstering weapons can help during an escape
Police searches use descriptions.
Law enforcement may know your clothing, mask, weapon or vehicle.
Change or remove those identifiers and parts of the description stop matching.
Combat, stealth and the Wanted system therefore overlap.
Criminal Profile records escalation
Criminal Profile evaluates what kind of criminal the player is becoming.
Nelson does not frame it as a simple morality meter.
The system cares about how you handle crimes and how aggressively you continue once a situation is under control.
A clean robbery and a massacre can both end with the money taken.
The world does not have to treat them the same afterward.
Jason and Lucia divide roles in combat
Both protagonists can participate in the same pursuit.
One drives while the other shoots.
Control can then switch.
The AI partner can also continue performing the other role.
That gives some fights two active positions rather than one player character with a passive companion.
The Extended Look shows cover and third-person gunplay
Rockstar shows firefights inside apartments, stores, vehicles, corporate buildings and streets.
Jason and Lucia use cover.
The presentation also includes melee combat and shooting from moving vehicles.
Rockstar has not published a complete technical breakdown of aim settings or difficulty options yet.
Does GTA 6 remove auto-aim?
Press previews describe manual aiming with assistance.
Rockstar has not published the final console aiming-options menu.
Current status:
manual aim with assistance → UNCONFIRMED
complete aim-assist settings → UNCONFIRMED
What is Focus?
Preview coverage describes a precision-aiming feature associated with slowed time and highlighted target areas.
The rules are not documented as clearly by Rockstar as suppressive fire.
Status: Unconfirmed.
Exact duration, recharge and protagonist differences should wait for better documentation.
Can you shoot arms and legs?
Press preview reporting describes targeted limb shots and the possibility of incapacitating or disarming some enemies.
Rockstar has not published the complete non-lethal damage model.
Status: Unconfirmed.
Nelson’s directly confirmed example is shooting vehicle tires to stop pursuers without killing them.
Can you go prone?
There is not enough current public evidence to treat prone movement as a confirmed launch mechanic.
The feature has circulated through discussion of older leaked development material.
That is not the same evidence as Rockstar’s 2026 public demonstrations.
Are human shields confirmed?
No.
The same caution applies to several mechanics associated with older leaked builds.
They should remain outside the confirmed feature list until Rockstar shows them or the finished game arrives.
