Each Gold Bar in Red Dead Redemption 2 sells for:
$500.
Current standard Story Mode contains 24 identifiable Gold Bars without using duplication glitches.
Total value:
24 × $500 = $12,000.
The names are similar. The values are not:
Gold Bar = $500.
Gold Ingot = $300.

How many can you get early?
A lot.
During Chapter 2, a current patched game can give you access to:
- Limpany — 1;
- Train Wreck — 2;
- Strange Statues — 3;
- Jack Hall Gang — 2;
- Poisonous Trail — 4;
- Landmarks of Riches — 6;
- High Stakes — 3 once that hunt becomes available.
That is potentially 21 Gold Bars very early.
You can get up to 21 early. You do not need 21.
Four or five are already enough to take most of the pressure off the early-game economy.
Where do you sell Gold Bars?
Sell them to a Fence.
The normal early route unlocks Seamus at Emerald Ranch through:

in Chapter 2.
Each Gold Bar pays:
$500.
1. Limpany — 1 Gold Bar
This is the first bar I would grab.
Limpany is the burned town south of Horseshoe Overlook.
Method
- Ride into Limpany.
- Find the sheriff’s office.
- Go inside.
- Walk behind the desk.
- Open the lockbox underneath it.
- Take the Gold Bar.
Value: $500.
Does it respawn?
Players have long reported respawn behavior under certain conditions.
This guide does not include duplicates.
The 24 count uses one bar from the normal pickup.
2–3. Train Wreck — 2 Gold Bars
The wreck sits in the ravine near Cotorra Springs / Granite Pass.
The two bars are inside the almost-vertical train car.
Method
Do not try to climb straight into it from below.
- Face the vertical carriage.
- Climb the slope to the right.
- Find the gap through the rocks.
- Jump to the opposite ledge.
- Reach the top of the carriage.
- Drop inside.
- Pick up both bars.
Value: $1,000.
Save first if you are worried about the jumps.
4–6. Strange Statues — 3 Gold Bars
A cave northeast of Bacchus Station, near Donner Falls, contains the Strange Statues puzzle.
The center statue hides:
3 Gold Bars.
Solution
Press the statue buttons corresponding to:
2 — 3 — 5 — 7
They represent the prime-number finger counts.
The center compartment opens.
Take all three bars.
Value: $1,500.
Pressed the wrong button?
Reset it from the rear of that statue.
You do not need to leave the cave.
7–8. Jack Hall Gang — 2 Gold Bars
Start with Maximo near Flatneck Station.
Buy his map.
Then follow:
- Caliban’s Seat.
- Cotorra Springs.
- O’Creagh’s Run.
The final treasure is on the small island in O’Creagh’s Run.
2 Gold Bars = $1,000.
9–11. High Stakes — 3 Gold Bars
After beginning treasure hunting, a treasure hunter can appear in West Elizabeth.
Get his map.
The chain runs through:
- Cumberland Falls.
- Barrow Lagoon.
- cliffs near Bacchus Station.
Final reward:
3 Gold Bars = $1,500.
If you repeatedly lose the treasure hunter encounter, the map can eventually become available through a Fence.
12–15. Poisonous Trail — 4 Gold Bars
The first map is in Cairn Lodge beside Cairn Lake.
Check the lockbox under the bed.
Then visit:
- Face Rock.
- Serpent Mound.
- the cave behind Elysian Pool.
Final reward:
4 Gold Bars = $2,000.
Bring your lantern.
16–21. Landmarks of Riches — 6 Gold Bars
This is the richest standard treasure hunt.
Start at the Obelisk northwest of Owanjila.
Then follow:
- Tiny Church in Bayou Nwa.
- Mysterious Hill Home.
- Bolger Glade.
- Mount Shann.
At the summit, find the stone sundial.
The final stash contains:
6 Gold Bars = $3,000.
This treasure hunt was added to Story Mode after the original 2018 release and is available on current updated versions.
22. Braithwaite Manor — 1 Gold Bar
Return to Braithwaite Manor after the Chapter 3 events leave the mansion burned.
Method
- Enter the ruins.
- Find Catherine Braithwaite’s body.
- Search the destroyed room nearby.
- Look for the lockbox against the western wall.
- Open it.
Inside:
1 Gold Bar = $500.
23. Rhodes Gold Bar — 1 Gold Bar
This is tied to a prisoner encounter around Crawdad Willies.
It is the easiest bar on the list to miss.
What happens
You can encounter two chained prisoners.
One dies.
Free the survivor by shooting his chain.
He gives you the location of a hidden Gold Bar near Rhodes.
Location
Go to the Rhodes water tower.
Cross the railroad tracks.
Search the group of rocks southwest of the tower.
1 Gold Bar = $500.
Important
The information comes from the prisoner encounter.
If you are building a 24-bar completionist save, pay attention to the Crawdad Willies events.
24. Elemental Trail — 1 Gold Bar
This one comes late.
You need normal access to New Austin.
The hunt begins around the Sea of Coronado, southwest of Tumbleweed.
Route
- Shoot down the hanging corpse and loot the first map.
- Search the chimney at Greenhollow.
- Search the elevated water trough at Benedict Point.
- Go to Coot’s Chapel cemetery.
- Search the marked grave.
Reward:
- 1 Gold Bar;
- Crow Beak Trinket;
- Special Horse Stimulant;
- Special Horse Medicine.
Gold Bar value: $500.
What about the German family’s gold?
At the end of A Strange Kindness, the rescued German family rewards Arthur with gold.
That reward is a Gold Ingot, rather than one of the $500 Gold Bars counted here.
A Gold Ingot sells for:
$300.
Sketched Map — another Gold Ingot
The Reed Cottage map north of Annesburg leads to a Gold Ingot near Elysian Pool.
Again:
$300.
It is not one of the 24 Gold Bars.
Ridgewood Farm — Gold Ingot
Another Gold Ingot exists at Ridgewood Farm during the Epilogue.
The pickup can behave awkwardly and community methods are often used to knock it out of its box.
It is also outside the 24 Gold Bar count.
Le Trésor des Morts
Some copies with the relevant pre-order bonus include:

Reward:
5 Gold Bars = $2,500.
That is additional edition/pre-order content.
I keep it separate from the standard 24.

Total:
6 Gold Bars = $3,000.
That is already enough to remove most early-game money pressure.

Finish Landmarks of Riches.
Another six.
Now you have:
12 Gold Bars = $6,000.
At that point money stops being much of a problem for normal Story Mode spending.
Do Arthur’s Gold Bars transfer to John?
Do not assume that storing all 24 bars on Arthur will simply carry them into John’s inventory.
The Epilogue transition changes cash and possessions.
If your goal is specifically to transfer wealth to John, plan for that separately.
Are all 24 required for 100%?
No.
Total Completion requires at least one completed Treasure Hunt.
It does not require every Gold Bar.
