Sony has unveiled the ECM-AX10, a microphone that plugs into your phone over USB-C and records with four omnidirectional capsules in three modes: ambisonics (spatial audio for YouTube), binaural (3D for headphones) and stereo. It weighs about 24 grams, works with recent iPhones and Android phones and costs $249.99 in the US (CAD $349.99), where preorders are open; in Spain, Sony lists it at around €199 for October. Sony Spain Sony calls it the first mic with Eclipsa Audio certification, the spatial audio format YouTube plays back. Technobezz SoundGuys

The three recording modes

Ambisonics records sound in 360 degrees for YouTube videos with Eclipsa Audio: when you turn your head or the picture, the sound moves with it. According to SoundGuys, that spatial audio only really pays off on YouTube. Binaural delivers 3D sound designed for headphones and works on any platform, even ones without Eclipsa Audio support. Stereo is the familiar mode for speakers or headphones. SoundGuys Technobezz

Who it’s for

Travel vlogs, concerts, events or immersive YouTube videos, where the sound of the place is part of the video. For talking to camera, a lavalier or handheld mic still isolates your voice better; for that job, a streaming microphone or a wireless kit like the DJI Mic Mini 2S fits better.

What isn’t confirmed

There are no independent sound tests yet: everything above comes from Sony and the press covering its announcement. 4K video inside its app arrives in December, not at launch.
